décembre 30th The Red Flag is raised in George Square, Glasgow on January 27th 1919 during the “forty hours strike”. The British government, fearing a revolution (like the one in Russia two years earlier) was imminent, responded by deploying 10,000 English troops to the city supported by machine guns and tanks. Scottish soldiers were not used as the government thought they would side with the strikers, potentially arming them. The strike ended in the “Battle of George Square” on January 31st, a running battle fought between strikers and police with melee weapons and missiles. Skirmishes lasted all day and well into the night. Hundreds were injured and dozens were arrested.
